Dear Friends,
Just a brief note about my own understanding of what it means to be the Church. I say "my own understanding," but it is really an outlook shared by many. Hear these words from a book entitled The Church by Hans Kung:
"The Church is always and everywhere a living people, gathered together from the peoples of the world and journeying through the midst of time. The Church is essentially en route, on a journey, a pilgrimage. . . . It is essentially an interim church in transition, and therefore not a church of fear but of expectation and hope: a Church which is directed towards the consummation of the world by God."
Something of what Hans Kung means by all this is found in a couple  of images from  the New Testament. Jesus calls disciples to "follow me." That is not a fixed point in time, but an ongoing task of following Jesus day by day. The Apostle Paul speaks of the Christian life in terms of a "walk," putting one foot in front of the other as we move from one spot to the next. As Hans Kung suggests, this walk is one of hope and expectation that we are moving towards the purpose God intends for us. This journey is one of faith in Jesus and one shared with fellow believers as we make our way in and through the world.
Memorial Presbyterian Church participates in this journey and is ready to encourage and help as we all seek to follow Jesus. We do this in worship, study, discipleship, and service. We do this to honor God and to build up the body of Christ that we all might attain to the unity of faith in Him.
God's Blessings,
